A token is a stock of a project ICO. For example, team of developers launches a project and asks investors to support them with money for the development, investors trust the team and give money, but not for free - they buy tokens (cryptocurrency that has not come into the cryptoexchange yet). Subsequently, when the cryptocurrency goes to the cryptoexchange, the investor will have the opportunity to sell it at a higher price.
